Not my picture.

...while swapping wheels on Saturday. I have to say, having never broken a stud before, it was quite easy to replace. Once you remove the brake caliper and disc, it’s as simple as gently knocking out the old one and pulling the new one into place. I used a stack of washers, but I’m thinking of picking up this:

Not because I need it, as I got by without it, but I love specialized tools.

Also, seeing as myself and the friend I was working with needed to go for a parts run to get the stud, I now have a few spares in my tool box, just in case...

Anyone else have a good weekend project, expected or otherwise?

Ha, wheel studs, who need them...

(*goes back to garage and barely manages to hold wheel squarely onto hub while starting bolts*)

Our old Passat was like that; fun times... I didn’t realize the SA22C/FB used wheel bolts rather than studs. I learned something there.

I’m not sure if wheel bolts are less prone to breaking, but regardless I think I I’d rather deal with the aftermath of breaking one of these studs than breaking the equivalent bolt.

Given how frequently I swap wheels for autocross through a year, I fully expect to break one at some point. I’m considering picking up some preemptive spares.

Yep I did this by overtightening a lug nut on my old car, ended up replacing all of the studs on both sides because it was kinda fun as you described haha

I’d say pick a few up. It’s worth it not to need to stop what you are doing to get parts. They are $2.70 a piece here in the States for OEM. I could have gotten them for $2 if I had been prepared and bought some the last time I did an online parts run.

It should be PN: 28365FE001 for yours.

ANy time I swap wheel bearings and if the studs still look decent, I’ll knock out the old ones for emergency use. Good to have on hand.

That’s why you use the alignment tool. I’ve done them both ways and it’s much easier with the tool. I even picked up a nice metal one to replace the plastic one that was in the trunk. Our Q7 already came with a nice aluminum one from the factory, but my sedans has plastic ones. They still do the trick though.

Fortunately the rx7's wheels are small/light enough I can hang them on the hub and hold them in place with one hand while running in the bolts with the other, it’s actually very easy.

Now, if the wheels were as heavy as my other cars, a dowel would be very helpful.

Installed a tow strap and picked up a tow... Uh. Rope, I guess. Come-along rope? Idk. Traction boards are next on the list. At some point a small winch. Also confirmed that my converter can in fact power my guitar amp and pedalboard.

No more getting stuck in the mountains and cdevising janky, dangerous extraction methods like the last “bungee cord, bottle jack, ghost riding” combo

So far, this was the first one for me personally. I’ve had a neighbor break three in quick succession already though...
